Hundreds of jobs are gone permanently with the closing of U.S. Steel's last coke production plant at the Gary Works complex.

U.S. Steel announced it would be closing its final operating coke production plant at Gary Works in Northwest Indiana.

The closing means the loss of 300 jobs. They add to the more than 500 already coming at other U.S. Steel plants.

Coke is made by taking a very pure coal and super-heating it. The by-product is the fuel used in blast furnaces to make iron. The impact it has on the environment, and the money spent to clean it up is great.

The company is moving coke production to its Clairton plant, outside of Pittsburgh. The facility recently underwent a more than $1 billion renovation to make it more efficient and more environmentally-friendly.
