What We’re Watching: Clark Manufacturing Tackles Hard-to-Machine Parts

A Traverse City job shop shows how 5-axis machining, precision grinding, and in-house quality checks help it machine Inconel, subsea, and surgical parts.

Most job shops chase volume. Clark Manufacturing chases difficulty. In this week's What We’re Watching, head inside the Traverse City, Michigan, shop that has spent more than 50 years building its business around parts other shops would rather pass on, including subsea oil & gas components, surgical parts, compressor components, and industrial equipment machined from materials like Inconel, Nitronic 60, and tough stainless steels.

In this Radical Job Shop Tour from the Marketing Metal YouTube channel, Emily Wilkins walks through Clark's 55,000 sq. ft. (5,110 sq. m.) facility. The tour covers CNC turning and milling, 5-axis machining centers, large horizontal milling, high-production lathe cells, and precision grinding for tight-tolerance work. Viewers also get a look at the shop's tooling and programming hub, its material inventory and customer stocking program, and its quality lab.

The video also explains how Clark's place within Centurion Metalworks extends its capabilities. Shared manufacturing resources and close work with sister company Century Sun Metal Treating on heat treatment let Clark take on more of a part's production without sending it out.

For plant managers and engineers sourcing complex components, the tour shows what to look for in a machining partner that specializes in hard materials. For shop owners, it shows how Clark pairs new high-production equipment with internships and in-house training to build its workforce and keep improving.
