WL25 PCD Indexable Inserts Improve Copy Turning Stability
Profiling and copy turning of aluminum, plastic, and titanium components can be limited by insert movement, inconsistent chip control, and vibration that affects surface finish over long production runs.
Walter's WL25 PCD indexable inserts are a line of four polycrystalline diamond (PCD) finishing inserts for W1011 and W1211 copy turning systems. The inserts have a fully ground circumference in G tolerance, produced within acceptable limits without over-specifying precision, and lasered chip-breaking geometries (FSM3 and FS3) for chip control.
The line includes four geometries:
- WL25-VCGW..FS-3 is a universal insert with a 0° rake angle for the highest repeat accuracy.
- WL25-VCGT..FS-3 has a 7° to 10° positive rake angle, producing the lowest cutting forces, a high-quality surface finish, and low vibration tendency.
- WL25-VCGT..FSM3 is designed for finishing to medium machining.
- WL25-RCGT..FSM3 is a full-radius grooving insert that can be applied across small and large feeds.
The primary application is profiling and copy turning aluminum (ISO N material group); secondary applications include machining plastics and titaniums (ISO O and S material groups). Finishing and fine-finishing inserts are both suitable for interrupted cuts. Feed (f) ranges from 0.001 to 0.015 in/rev (0.03 to 0.38 mm/rev), and depth of cut (ap) ranges from 0.004 to 0.118 in (0.1 to 3.0 mm).
The Walter Lock (WL) system uses three female contact surfaces on the tool steel body and three corresponding male prismatic seats on the underside of the carbide seats to prevent insert movement in the tool body, supporting fine surface finishes in profiling and copy turning. The PCD cutting material offers high wear resistance, and the laser-cut circumferential precision supports repeat accuracy when indexing.
