scanCONTROL 8500 Laser Scanners Deliver 4K 3D Measurement in Compact
Inline measurement in automated production environments demands high accuracy and high throughput without sacrificing integration flexibility—especially as machine layouts grow more constrained. The scanCONTROL 8500 is a compact 3D laser profile scanner with 4K resolution, integrated SMART evaluation, and onboard 3D data processing that eliminates the need for an external control module.
The scanner uses a 4K sensor matrix with up to 4,224 measuring points per profile, a profile frequency of up to 10 kHz, and a measurement rate of up to 25 million points/sec. Its optical system is designed to fully exploit the 4K resolution, producing accurate results even on complex surface geometries. The series is available in 25, 50, and 100 mm (0.98, 1.97, and 3.94 in) measuring ranges.
A distinguishing feature is Green Laser technology—the first use of this approach in a laser scanner of its class. Green laser combines characteristics of red and blue laser wavelengths to reduce noise, shorten exposure times, lower the influence of ambient light, and improve signal stability across a wide range of materials and surfaces, including those that are challenging for conventional laser systems.
Onboard SMART 3D data processing allows measured values to be fully calculated within the sensor and transmitted directly to a controller via Industrial Ethernet, including PROFINET, EtherCAT, and EtherNet/IP, as well as native Ethernet via UDP and Modbus TCP. Alternatively, calibrated 3D point clouds (Valid3D) or 2D profile data can be output for external processing via GigE Vision/GenICam. More than 80 measurement programs support 2D and 3D evaluation tasks, including gap dimension, angle, and step height.
The scanCONTROL 8500 is up to 4.8x more compact than comparable systems, enabling easier integration into machines, production lines, and retrofit applications. It supports both static mounting and robot-mounted configurations. Cooling options—including passive cooling fins, active cooling fins with fans, and custom cooling solutions—are available for high-ambient-temperature environments such as plastic extrusion and welding.
