FDMC Launches Dynamic Partnering
Dynamic Partnering is a new effort by the FIA-Dept.of Defense Manufacturing Consortium (FDMC) to help align and better facilitate the DOD supply chain with forging parts supplier companies and their customers. It is a logical extension of the National Forging Tooling Database (NFTD), a program introduced by FDMC a year ago.
Dynamic Partnering will be developed to create the ability to scan and evaluate the capabilities of forging suppliers to locate forges with the desired capabilities to supply forged components needed by the Defense Logistics Agency.
FIA members who are interested in learning more about Dynamic Partnering and its benefits are urged to contact FDMC project manager Dr. Mark VonderembseDr. Mark Vonderembse, University of Toledo.
Fundamentals 101 Workshop on CD
The FDMC is pleased to offer FIA member companies copies of the “Fundamentals 101 for the Forge Shop”. Held in conjunction with the 25th Forging Industry Technical Conference, the workshop presentation is now available on CD.
Forging managers, designers, and engineers learn about the complex forging process through years of experience. This presentation of the science of the forging process to forgers is straightforward and simplified. Concepts of energy, power, work, adiabatic heating, friction, stress, and strain were described without the use of calculus.
Applications to forging equipment, materials, and processes were included to close the loop. The class successfully clarified the fundamentals of the forging process for attendees ranging from experienced designers and senior executives to young engineers and manufacturing personnel.
The workshop, sponsored by the Defense Logistics Agency, FDMC, FIA, Colorado School of Mines and Scientific Forming Technologies Corp., is available by contacting Jon Tirpak, 843-760-4346 or via e-mail.
FIA Welcomes New Members

Chicago to Host IFC 08
The triennial International Forging Congress (IFC) will be held Sept. 7-12, 2008, at the Sheraton Towers in Chicago. The FIA will serve as the host association. Last held in Japan in 2005, the 2008 Congress will mark the return of the IFC to the United States since 1986. Planning is underway with several plant tours slated for the six-day event.
The objective of the Congress is to foster good will and information exchange among the world’s forging community. Check back to the FIA website for details as they are available.
