MACSTEEL to Expand Heat-Treat Facility

Jan. 11, 2006
$6.2-million project to add another quench/temper line

SBQ producer MACSTEEL has been approved by its parent company for a new expansion of its heat-treating operation at Huntington, IN. Quanex Corp. confirmed plans to add a fourth quench-and-temper line for its wholly owned subsidiary, at a total cost of $6.2 million.

The entire project calls for the Q&T line, with induction heating, and a new high-speed precision cutting line for specific product applications. It will add processing capacity for 16,000 tons of bar and tube products and increase MACSTEEL's product-size range and value-adding services. The expansion is set to be complete early in 2007. No contractor has been named to supply the new equipment.

MACSTEEL operates three mini-mills (Jackson and Monroe, MI, and Fort Smith, AR) and two processing plants (in Huntington, and in Pleasant Prairie, WI). Company president Mark A. Marcucci stated: "MACSTEEL's Heat Treat business has grown significantly in recent years because of its commitment to meeting customer needs."
