ATI Allvac Recommissions Richburg Mill

Capital project includes rotary forging operation
Oct. 20, 2004

ATI Allvac has recommissioned its Richburg, SC, superalloy and specialty steel plant, following a project that expands operating capacity and increases value-added processing capabilities.

According to Allvac, the improvements include a rotary forge system for on-site production of rerolling billet. Also added have been a new, larger induction furnace and new control instruments and mill control systems.

Rotary forging is process where rapid simultaneous action of forging hammers subjects the work-piece to a high rate of deformation under uniform compressive stressing. The process is said to provide optimum metallurgical consistency.
