SME Offers Certificate Program on Forging Operations June 8-10 Jeff Fredline, Federal Forge, is course instructor The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is offering a new training program, “Understanding Forging Presses & Operations,” in Detroit on June 8-10. The program will provide a comprehensive overview of the forging process, and an in-depth look at the techniques and practices that can enhance the reliability of forging operations.

Attendees can participate in SME’s Certificate Program, which includes pre- and post-program testing and receive a certificate of achievement. The SME, based in Detroit, is a leader in providing manufacturing training and technical resources.

Course instructor is Jeff Fredline, who has many years of experience in the forging industry. Currently, he is maintenance manager at Federal Forge in Lansing, MI. He has earned journeyman status in the machine repair industry and holds a Bachelor of Business degree. He currently serves on the Plant Engineering Committee of the Forging Industry Association and has taken part in many forging industry conferences.

Some of the topics to be covered by the three-day course are Press Terminology Overview, Foundations, Drive Train Design, Clutches and Brakes, Crankshaft/Frame Designs, The Importance of Proper Level and Alignment of Press Components, Troubleshooting, Preventative Maintenance and Inspections, and Press Safety.

Attendees will receive a free copy of SME’s 23-min video detailing the forging process (a $255 value to non-members) and a complimentary copy of the bestseller, Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop, written with Lean implementers in mind (a $75 value).

The registration fee also covers a plant tour of Ringmasters in Wayne, MI, a forge shop represented and half-owned by Scot-Forge that produces seamless rolled rings. While on tour of this 100,000-square-foot facility, visitors will see cutting, heat treating, rough machining, parting, splitting and shot blasting. Their complete metallurgical laboratory also conducts mechanical and ultra sonic tests. Equipment on site includes two ring rolling mills, three pre-form hydraulic presses, forge furnaces, quench tanks, multiple heat treat furnaces and vertical turret lathes.

All course sessions will be held at SME International Headquarters located at One SME Drive, Dearborn, MI (southwest corner of Ford Road and Evergreen).

The registration fees is $1395 for SME members; $1595 for nonmembers. Pre-payment is required. Registration deadline is May 25. Course materials will be mailed to registrants in advance of the program.
