Allegheny Technologies Inc. acquired Addaero Manufacturing, a New Britain, CT, producer of additive-manufactured metal parts for aerospace and defense industries. The cost of the purchase was not announced.
“This strategic acquisition brings together ATI’s deep knowledge and experience in commercial aerospace and our industry-leading, powder metal manufacturing capabilities, including our new aerospace-qualified Bakers Powder Operations, and Addaero’s technical expertise to produce aerospace-quality parts using various additive manufacturing technologies,” stated ATI chairman Rich Harshman.
Addaero Manufacturing was formed in 2013 by three aerospace industry executives. It uses electron-beam melting to produce precision parts in alloys of titanium, cobalt-chrome, and nickel alloys, and stainless steels. The business is AS9100C and ISO 9001:2008 certified.
ATI manufactures titanium alloys, nickel-based alloys, and superalloys, along with stainless and specialty steels. It also produces finished products (including forgings), and lists aerospace and defense, “particularly jet engines”, as its primary customer group. Its forging capabilities include isothermal forging, die forging, and ring rolling.
Harshman called Addaero’s manufacturing capabilities "a natural extension of ATI’s metallic powder expertise," noting the new business would expand ATI’s assets for designing and producing additive-manufactured parts.
He further described Addaero as a “building block in our strategy to enhance ATI’s full specialty materials capabilities to provide end customers with finished products.”
