Atlas Copco Expands U.S. Compressor and Vacuum Pump Production at Three Sites
Atlas Copco Group has added U.S. production capacity for oil-free compressors, dry vacuum pumps, and gas and process equipment at three sites in New York and South Carolina. The company marked the projects during Expansion Week US, held Oct. 26–29.
For plant and procurement teams, the main benefit is supply. Building these machines in the U.S. should shorten lead times and reduce exposure to overseas supply chain disruptions. That matters most for anyone sourcing large centrifugal compressors, semiconductor-grade vacuum pumps, or oil-free air systems.
Voorheesville, NY: Large Centrifugal Compressors and Turboexpanders
Atlas Copco Comptec, part of the Group's Gas and Process division, opened a 63,000-sq.-ft. addition at its 45-acre campus on October 26. The space is fully operational and already in use.
The expansion is designed for much larger turbomachinery than the site could build before. New additions include:
- Multiple cranes and hoists for heavier lifts
- Upgraded testing infrastructure
- Expanded logistics and warehousing
The added space lets Comptec handle the full engineer-to-order process in the U.S., from design to delivery. That means a domestic source for large integrally geared centrifugal compressors and turboexpanders for hydrocarbon processing, liquefied natural gas, carbon capture and storage, industrial heat pumps, and industrial gases. Comptec has engineered, built, and serviced compressors at the site since 1980, and the expansion will grow the workforce to about 340.
"This expansion is built with the future in mind," said Tony Sardella, general manager of Atlas Copco Comptec. "Scaling up allows us to build larger, more advanced products and meet the demand for our customers across key industries."
Genesee County, NY: Dry Vacuum Pumps for Semiconductors
Edwards Vacuum, part of Atlas Copco Group, opened a 250,000-sq.-ft. facility in Western New York that makes advanced dry vacuum pumps for semiconductor manufacturing. The site was built to meet demand from new chip fab construction across the U.S. and will supply customers in North America and worldwide.
The plant runs on renewable hydroelectric power from nearby Niagara Falls and is expected to employ up to 600 people in manufacturing, engineering, and technical roles. The project received $18 million in federal CHIPS Act funding.
"As chip manufacturers continue to invest in next-generation technologies and expanded production in the United States, Edwards is proud to invest alongside them," said Martin Tollner, president of Atlas Copco Group's Semiconductor division. "This facility strengthens domestic manufacturing capabilities, supports a more resilient semiconductor supply chain, and demonstrates our commitment to providing world-class vacuum technology built in the United States."
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called the site "America’s first semiconductor dry pump manufacturing facility."
Rock Hill, SC: Z Range Oil-Free Air Compressors
Atlas Copco Compressors will begin U.S. assembly of select models from its Z range of oil-free air compressors at a new 200,000-sq.-ft. facility. The site will also handle assembly, distribution, and remanufacturing for several Atlas Copco Group businesses.
"Expansion Week reflects our long-term commitment to producing products closer to our customers," said Aaron Prato, president of Atlas Copco North America, Inc. "These investments help us strengthen supply chains, respond more quickly to customer needs, and support continued industrial growth in the United States."
Atlas Copco Group runs 26 production, remanufacturing, and distribution centers and more than 160 locations in the U.S., with about 7,500 employees.
