Chef Robotics Food Robot Automates Meal Assembly With AI and Multi-Deposit

Sept. 4, 2025
Chef Robotics Food Robot uses AI and an NSF-certified design to handle multiple utensils and boost throughput in food production lines.

The Chef Robotics Food Robot is an AI-enabled system for meal assembly in food manufacturing facilities. The robot combines off-the-shelf hardware with proprietary food manipulation software, ChefOS, to provide flexible, high-mix automation for industrial food production.

The robot is certified to NSF/ANSI 169 standards for food safety and cleanability requirements, covering design, materials, construction, and performance to ensure suitability for food contact and ease of cleaning and sanitization. The C-001748 module is currently the only NSF-certified "Food Portioning Robotic Module" under this standard.

The multi-deposit feature allows the robot to operate with two or three utensils at once. By picking ingredients once and depositing them across multiple trays, throughput increases to 30+ trays/minute, compared to 15 to 20 trays with a single-deposit operation. AI software ensures consistent portioning across multiple utensils and predicts tray arrival when the robot's camera view is occluded.

The robot module works with:

  • Fresh, cooked, and chilled "scoopable" food
  • IQF vegetables, meats, and sauces
  • Piece picking
  • Small or large portions
  • Clear trays
  • Small trays
  • Triangular trays
  • Placement in inserts
  • Two compartments/containers
  • Continous, stop-and-go, and multi-lane conveyors

Robots operate alongside workers on production lines, picking and placing ingredients from conveyors into trays. Each meal assembled contributes to ongoing AI training, improving food manipulation capabilities over time.

Each robot occupies the same footprint as a human and is on casters, operating on 120V, compressed air, and a Wi-Fi connection. This means that Chef's Systems don't require retrofitting; just slide them onto the line and run. The robots can even be moved from one line to another during a shift, helping you to maximize their utilization.

To date, Chef robots have assembled over 60 million servings in customer production facilities across North America.
