Altera SF Coordinate Measuring Machines Enable High-Accuracy Shop Floor Inspection

May 22, 2025
LK Metrology’s Altera SF CMMs feature glass-ceramic optical scales for zero thermal expansion and superior contamination resistance.

Altera SF coordinate measuring machines are bridge-type CMMs designed for high-precision inspection directly on the shop floor. Available in 8 models, they feature nominal axis travels ranging from 39 x 39 x 31 to 157 x 59 x 59 in (1,000 x 1,000 x 800 to 4,000 x 1,500 x 1,500 mm), enabling measurement of large or bulky components without relocating them to separate QC rooms.

Each model incorporates a ceramic bridge and spindle for dimensional stability, stiffness-to-weight ratio, and thermal resistance. The CMMs use friction drives with air bearings for smooth axis movements and compatibility with laser scanning, analogue scanning, and touch-trigger probing. Probe head options include the Renishaw PH10MQ PLUS and REVO2, the latter enabling 5-axis measurement as a Scantek model.

Glass-ceramic optical scales are used for position feedback, offering zero thermal expansion and high resistance to contamination. These low-maintenance scales enhance long-term measurement stability and minimize interpolation errors.

The guideways are protected by covers and internal positive air pressure to prevent contamination. Fans below the granite table ensure thermal balance in uncontrolled environments, while embedded axis sensors compensate all measurements to a 68°F (20°C) reference. Optional thermistors can be attached to the workpiece or integrated into the fixture.

To reduce the impact of mechanical vibrations, the machines are mounted on elastomer shock-absorbing supports, with optional passive or active intelligent anti-vibration systems. The active version includes magnetic field sensors that electro-pneumatically adjust the table to within ±0.1 mm height and 0.9 mm level tolerance.

Each machine includes an LK NMC300 controller and the CAMIO software suite, supporting real-time monitoring of quality data and system status on smart devices. Safety features protect both users and equipment, and a standard EcoAir function reduces compressed air use by up to 95% during idle periods. Power to the motors is also automatically shut off after inactivity.
