Robotic Fashion and Parcel Inductors Use AI for Fast Picking

May 5, 2025
ABB's Robotic Item Picking modules offer collision-free path planning through AI vision and motion control integration.

Robotic Item Picking functional modules are AI-powered automation systems designed to perform item singulation and sorter induction in logistics and e-commerce operations.

The Robotic Fashion Inductor and Robotic Parcel Inductor use AI-based vision to identify and handle unknown and randomly arranged items in unstructured, high-throughput environments such as warehouses and sorting centers.

Both modules achieve over 99.5% picking accuracy and can identify and reject non-inducible items like spherical or cylindrical shapes. The Robotic Fashion Inductor processes polybagged apparel and accessories at up to 1,300 picks/h, while the Robotic Parcel Inductor handles small parcels—including boxes, bags, envelopes, and packages—at up to 1,500 picks/h.

The AI system integrates with motion planning software to automatically calculate collision-free paths for each item picked. The modules are pre-integrated to reduce commissioning time, setup complexity, and operational errors, with deployment possible in as little as one week. A single computer and user interface manage robots, grippers, and cameras using the Application Controller Platform.
