Phosphate Coating Only Takes Five Steps

July 7, 2017
Birchwood Technologies has introduced another coating that only takes 15 minutes to process.

MICROLOK MZN finish is a fine-grained zinc phosphate coating for iron and steel components. It provides protection up to 1400°F for high heat applications such as pistons, rotor and calipers, and machined components where break-in lubricity is critical.

The coating is a twenty-minute process that requires just five easy steps:

  1. CLEAN the metal surface using SAFE SCRUB ST biodegradable cleaner: 150°F.
  2. RINSE in clean water.
  3. APPLY MICROLOK MZN finish: 140-160°F.
  4. RINSE in clean water.

When compared to room temperature blackening, the MICROLOK MZN coating exhibits better corrosion resistance and operates at a lower cost. It is safe to apply at a temperature of 140-160° F with no boiling or splattering, and bath maintenance requiring only a simple procedure to monitor the concentration.

This finish is ideal for parts that do not require a dark black finish, but need robust corrosion protection. The MICROLOK MZN zinc phosphate finish complies with MIL-DTL-16232G, Type Z, Classes 1, 2 and 3.

Finishers with existing lines can easily convert to the MICROLOK MZN process. There are no technical or costly conversion challenges switching from an existing cold process using existing tank facilities.

  • solution operates at a safe 120-160° F, with no fumes or splattering.
  • mild pH of 4 to 5
  • requires only five steps and about 15-20 minutes.
  • maintained by a simple titration procedure to monitor the concentration.
  • withstands up to 1400° F without degradation
  • complete In-House Tank Line Systems are available at low cost and are supplied complete with training of your operators by factory personnel.
  • complies with MIL-DTL-16232G, Type Z, Classes 1, 2, 3.
