Hazardous Area Encoder

The new 78E Series Ex Encoder from Pepperl+Fuchs is especially designed for applications in hazardous areas. The 78E Series with its “flameproof enclosure” has ATEX and IEC Ex international approval in addition to third-party approval by TÜV. It is designed for the oil/gas, refineries, mining and material handling (agriculture, chemicals) industries. The new 78E Series is available in wide range of interfaces, including SSI, CANopen, DeviceNet, or PROFIBUS. Along with these different protocols, this encoder series has a removable cover that allows easy configuration and connection to a PLC.

“A special feature of the 78E rotary encoder is the modular design with removable connection cover,” explains Robert Pasho, Lead Team – Application Engineering, Pepperl+Fuchs. “The connection covers are supplied either with a cable or with only a certified cable gland, providing the option of customized cabling.” In addition to simple installation, the modularity facilitates simple maintenance because the rotary encoder can be replaced independently of the cable. For fieldbus versions, bus coding takes place in the connection cover. This means that the user can program the relevant address on site and set the terminator if required. These hazardous area rotary encoders feature a compact 78 mm diameter housing available in anodized aluminum or stainless steel. For the mechanical connection, users can select between a clamp and synchro flange.

They deliver maximum speeds to 3000 rpm and are designed for a temperature range of -40 °C ... +70 °C.  The 78E Series is of a “flameproof enclosure” ignition protection class (Ex d) and meets the international ATEX and IECEx requirements for gases according to Zones 1 and 2 and dust according to Zones 21 and 22. As a result, these rotary encoders are suitable for global use in oil/gas, refinery, mining and material handling applications, among others.
