Ultracapacitor Offering Expanded To Include Ultra-Low Profile PowerBurst® Modules

Announced today by Tecate Industries, a leading global supplier of ultracapacitors and capacitors, is the extension of their PowerBurst® Series of ultracapacitors to include the ultra-low profile PBF Series of modules.  Engineered to satisfy the requirements of short-term burst and back-up power in space-constrained applications, the RoHS-compliant modules’ design incorporates stainless steel, hermetically sealed prismatic cells that are active balanced and UL Recognized.  This unique construction facilitates the devices’ extremely low profile (5.7 mm max.) and capacitance range of from 1.0 F to 5.0 F.  Design flexibility is further optimized, as the PBF Series is comprised of parts in three voltages ranging from 5 VDC through 10 VDC.  These highly reliable modules offer over 500,000 duty cycles and a 10-year life capability.  The new electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) modules may be confidently specified for use in a broad array of applications in which short-term power, or back-up power is required to ensure the performance of systems in which space is limited, and weight is a factor.  PBF modules are most commonly employed in automatic meter readers (AMRs), solid state drives (SSDs), and in a wide range of wireless transmission applications including handheld and portable consumer, industrial and medical devices.  Their back-up power capabilities make them ideally suited for soft shutdown, “dying gasp” notification, battery swaps, and memory retention.  The low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) parts notably address the power delivery problems in applications requiring peak or power burst capabilities, and frequently enable designers to downsize the primary system batteries.   Offering design engineers a choice of sizes, voltages and capacitances, PBF modules are  available in six sizes ranging from 48 mm (L) x 5.7 mm (W) x 20 mm (H), to 96 mm (L) x 5.7 mm (W) x 35 mm (H),  and in six capacitance values including 1.0 F, 2.0 F, 2.5 F, 3.33 F and 5.0 F.  Parts may be ordered with voltages of 5.0 VDC, 7.5 VDC, or 10 VDC and with ESRs of from 0.36 O to 1.60 O.  Their capacitance tolerance is +/-20%, and wide operating temperature range is -40 degrees C to +70 degrees C.  The ultracapacitor modules are provided with wire leads and a JST ZHR-2 quick connect assembly.  Custom configurations are offered.  • Operating temperature: -40°C to +65°C • Storage temperature: -40°C to +70°C • Rated voltage: 5.4 VDC • Surge voltage: 5.7 VDC • Capacitance range: 0.25F to 15F • Capacitance tolerance: ±20% • Characteristics at low temperature Capacitance Change - Within ±5% of initial measured value at +25°C(-40°C to +65°C) Internal resistance - Within ±50% of initial measured value at +25°C(at -40°C) • Lifetime at 25°C 10 years Capacitance change ±30 % of initial rated value Internal resistance Within 2 times of initial specified value • Cycle life at 25°C 500,000 cycles Capacitance change ±30 % of initial rated value Internal resistance Within 2 times of initial specified value • Endurance After 1000 hours. application of 5.4V DC at 65°C, the capacitor shall meet the following limits: Capacitance change - ±30% of initial rated value Internal resistance - Within 2 times of initial specified value • Shelf life - After 1000 hours storage, at 70°C without load, the capacitor shall meet the specified endurance limits.
