Safe Equipment Access is not One-Size-Fits-All

June 20, 2018
Safe equipment access is a priority that deserves a custom solution designed to meet specific requirements.

Application, environment, frequency of use, and duration are among the factors to consider when designing a system to provide safe equipment access. The stair experts at Lapeyre Stair can design a cost-effective, custom access system that will meet almost any combination of requirements.

Lapeyre Stair’s product line includes conventional steel stairs, alternating tread stairs, platforms, legs, bracing kits, and safety gates. All of their products are designed for easy integration and flexible customization. Every order they receive is custom built based on individual project requirements and specifications using pre-engineered components. This approach allows their customers to better manage costs and deadlines while also receiving the best possible solution for their needs.

Affordable, easy-to-install custom access systems

Conventional stairs are the preferred option for applications without space restraints. Lapeyre Stair’s steel bolted stairs ship unassembled to reduce shipping costs. The erection bolt design allows them to be quickly assembled on site without the need for welders or expensive equipment—even in compact spaces. They can also be disassembled for use on mobile or modular structures.

Blast Cleaning Technology turned to Lapeyre Stair to provide safe access for their Monorail Shot Blast Cleaning System. Lapeyre Stair’s in-house engineering team customized their Model 01/02 steel bolted stairs to meet Blast Cleaning Technology’s needs. The entire system was shipped flat and quickly assembled on-site. The result was an affordable, secure egress system that provides safe, maintenance-friendly access throughout the machine.

Proven safety and comfort for applications in confined spaces

Alternating tread stairs provide improved safety and ease of use over ladders and steep stairs for applications with space restraints that limit the use of conventional stairs. They are ideal for factories and in-plant offices as well as ships and offshore vessels. Alternating tread stairs are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum with a choice of handrail and finish options. Each alternating tread stair is custom built to exact vertical height up to 20 feet at either a 56 or 68-deg. angle.

The Department of Industrial Engineering at Virginia Tech conducted a study to evaluate the safety and comfort of alternating tread stairs compared to a conventional ship’s ladder. The findings led to the conclusion that alternating tread stairs were safer and more comfortable than a conventional ship’s ladder. The following data was compiled from that study.

Objective Measure: Missteps were recorded over the duration of the study

Alternating tread stair Conventional ship's ladder
Ascending with load 4 5
Ascending without load 3 9
Descending with load 7 16
Descending without load 8 8
Total missteps 22 38

Subjective Measure: Each participant completed a questionnaire at the end of the study
