Maintaining exact forces for best results with a pneumatic press

Printer Friendly VersionEmail A FriendAdd This

Determining the force needed to crimp tubing or press bearings into housings is relatively easy. First, install a gauge to monitor pressure at the cylinder extend port from its control valve. Situate the work under the ram with supply pressure a t zero. Shift the valve to extend position and gradually increase pressure. As the ram moves to the application, continue increasing pressure while observing the application. The moment your application is completed, read the gauge. Multiplying this pressure (psig) by the effective piston area (in2) of the cylinder yields the force (lb.) required by your application.
