Oriental Motor Expands its Universe of Users and Applications with New Rotary Actuator

You might say that the DG II-Series rotary actuator is an example of a product that is greater than the sum of its parts.
By combining its DG-Series rotary actuator with its AR-Series motor, Oriental Motor Co. developed "a more flexible system with many more features at a much lower price," explains Todd Walker, national marketing manager for the company's U.S. business unit.
"With higher efficiencies possible from this actuator, the users and applications have become broader," Walker tells New Equipment Digest.
NED: What led Oriental Motor to develop this particular actuator?
TW: Oriental Motor has long been known as a leading manufacturer of AC motors, brushless motors and stepper motors. With our expansion into the linear- and rotary-actuator market, this trend continues.
Our original DG-Series rotary actuators were very unique and offered many advantages and performance options to our customers. By combining two of our unique products, we were able to create the DG II Series. This rotary actuator features more options – including a built-in controller that can be controlled with just I/O – and our closed-loop, energy-efficient AR-Series motor.
The result is a more flexible system with many more features at a much lower price. With higher efficiencies possible from this actuator, the users and applications have become broader.
NED: How is this product different from other actuators being offered?
TW: Our DG II Series is more compact than most cam systems and other rotary tables, accomplishing the same motion at a lower price. Its significant performance characteristics include permissible torque up to 440 pound-inches, permissible thrust loads up to 900 pounds and a guaranteed positional accuracy of plus or minus 15 sec.
On top of this, the DG II Series is a complete solution from one manufacturer with guaranteed performance specifications, a wide range of sizes, input voltages and a two-year warranty, backed by quick lead times and a technical support team there to help.
There is no guesswork needed, as the motor and actuator specifications together are known.
NED: What was the length of time from conception to final production?
TW: Our original DG Series was popular, but the market required more. More driver options, brake options and easy wiring to PLCs, for example.
This required Oriental Motor to improve our engine options, so we focused on that. It took us about two years to complete this, and then another few months to move this over to our actuator line for the engine option there.
NED: Did cost factors affect the final design of this product?
TW: Absolutely. Not only is "providing what the market needs, when the market needs it" our mission, but providing cost-effective solutions that meet or exceed from a budgetary standpoint is key.
For the past five years, Orient Motor has been looking at ways to lower our customer costs and increase customer value. By combining technologies, we were able to achieve this with the DG II-Series rotary actuators.
We were able to reduce our list price just around 20 percent and increase the overall value and functionality our customers have been requesting.
NED: Who do you view as the primary users of this rotary actuator?
TW: Because these actuators are so easy to use and offered as a complete system, we have seen customers using them in many different applications and industries, from CNC tools to robotic arm joints to semiconductor processing tools to flat-panel assembly machines to test and assembly lines.
With the large hollow-diameter through hole, routing vacuum or air lines, wires or other components is common. We have even seen these used in applications such as the rail industry to press railroad wheel bearings into the wheels thanks to the high thrust loads possible.
With the ability to mount the DG II Series in many ways, horizontal or vertical for example, and with the thrust loads and high accuracy specifications offered, many different types of applications are using these products.
