"We designed the KL-2020 Nibbler to accept interchangeable attachments, allowing our customers to experience significant price savings, by
using several different cutting attachments on the same electric or
pneumatic motor, transforming from one tool to another in a matter of
minutes," said Alex Rozumovich, Director of Engineering. "The KL-2020’s upstroke cutting and a super-compact die design make it unique among other nibblers that claim to cut the same material thickness. Add to it a free-floating punch, which randomly exposes its entire 360-deg cutting edge circumference for added tool life, and you’ve got a winner!
"Kett’s extensive line of power shears, nibblers, and circular saws covers a wide range of materials and sizes. We saw an opportunity to introduce a mid-range model: an electric nibber, cutting 14-gauge mild steel, which would bridge the gap between our 18 and 10-gauge models. We also wanted to offer our customers a very versatile tool, capable of cutting various corrugated metal materials, which is becoming increasingly popular in construction and manufacturing industries."
NED: Any particular problems that came up during the development process?
AR: The major problem we encountered was developing the right electric drive for the tool. The most ergonomic solution for power nibblers is a compact, straight-handle motor, which we had never used before. Fortunately, we were able to work with a very reputable European supplier, who developed it to our specifications. We even built an entirely new tooling line based on this motor, complementing the KL-2020 nibbler with other shear and scissor models. To make it even more versatile, we upgraded our pneumatic motor, which made it more ergonomic and powerful enough to drive the new 14-gauge nibbling attachment. Additionally, maneuverability and the punch and die sizes presented additional challenges. After extensive experimenting and testing, we solved them by incorporating some unique design features and advanced super-strong tool steels.
NED: Did cost factors affect the final design of this product?
AR: Cost is always one of the main driving factors behind the product design, but Kett’s unique interchangeable heads provide major savings to the customers. Carefully designed “near shape” casting components minimize expensive CNC machining. By the same token, we choose only the best and most reliable suppliers, develop long-lasting relationships, and address all problems as a team of close partners.
NED: Who do you view as the primary users of this nibbler and how will they benefit?
AR: Professional contractors in building construction and metal fabrications are our main customers. Other users work in electric, automotive, and aerospace industries. All of them will benefit from using the KL-2020 nibbler, especially if they make it a part of the versatile multi-tool Kett kit. Knowing that a leading domestic manufacturer stands behind its product, as Kett has for more than 70 years, should definitely be an important point in choosing the right tool for the job.
