FasTest is focused on providing ergonomic production tools for
leak and performance testing that improve customers’ manufacturing
"The FasMate FX Series makes an instant connection to a male thread with
very little effort. This aids manufacturers who must achieve quick cycle
times, high-volume production, or those who wish to improve their
overall manufacturing process," explains Mark Spindler, manufacturing-leak test production manager.
NED: How are these connectors different from similar products?
MS: Special care was given to develop a compact, balanced design for ease of use in a high-volume production environment. We designed features that make this product easy to service and maintain with common mechanic’s tools.
NED: What problems did you encounter during the development process?
MS: How the FX “felt” in the users’ (operators’) hand. Much consideration was given to the balance and the potential strain on the operator when using this production tool. To this point, size, weight, and the option for pneumatic operation were important considerations.
NED: How long did it take from conception to final production?
MS: Approximately 18 months. FasTest takes great care in providing a safe product. This product is rated to be used for pressures up to 5,000 psi. We have a very structured design and release process that validates the design and our manufacturing process at every step of introduction to the market. For additional information about this process, our release process can be made available through a direct customer request at fastestinc.com.
NED: What effect did cost factors have in changing the final design of the product?
MS: The cost factor in the final design was minimal. Consideration to cost was given to the initial design. The FX is designed on a modular concept. The basic housing can accommodate many different thread configurations by assembling with the appropriate components. Once the base housing is assembled, the next modular component is the choice of manual squeeze lever or pneumation actuation. This modular design allows us to create the right connnector for most applications from stock components quickly and at an affordable price.
NED: Who is your target audience and what benefits will they achieve from using this product?
: The target audience for our FX Series is manufacturing/production engineers, quality engineers, safety/ergonomic engineers, and plant managers. These audiences are generally directly responsible for production and operation within a manufacturing facility.
