When Goodway Technologies was looking for a new product to help maintain efficiency for HVAC systems, packaging was an issue. “The biggest challenge presented was developing the TubeGuard-XL cleaning solution so that it provided all of the benefits we intended, but yet in a safe-to-handle and environmentally friendly package,” explained Timothy Kane, president of Goodway Technologies.
“A significant challenge indeed given the existing liquid products currently on the market,” he added. “The idea was born to create a custom ‘tablet’ that would allow the end user to stay away from the messy liquids that existing cleaning processes typically relied on. The only problem was that a product such as this didn’t exist. We spent many long months perfecting the formula for the cleaner and the appropriate dissolve rates to deliver the most impactful, yet efficient, delivery system.
NED: What motivated Goodway to develop this chiller tube cleaner?
TK: As budgets continue to tighten and energy prices increase, more and more focus has been put on maintaining efficiency for HVAC systems. As the market leader in chiller tube cleaning, we have the continued responsibility to innovate cleaning solutions that provide our customers with an immediate energy benefit. Our research and development in this area demonstrated that there was an opportunity to create an enhanced cleaning process that went well beyond the current capabilities of rotary tube cleaning. Our goal was to allow the building personnel in charge of HVAC energy efficiency a cutting-edge solution to a longstanding problem.
NED: How is this chiller tube cleaner different from similar ones on the market today?
TK: The RAM-PRO-XL was built from the ground up to deliver the absolute best in tube cleaning technology. A number of features and benefits built into the RAM-PRO-XL are available as an industry first. However, the most significant would be the addition of TubeGuard chiller tube treatment process. For the first time ever, it will be possible to rotary clean your chiller tubes with the added benefit of a multiple layered chemical treatment process that will create instantaneous results. The uniqueness of the RAM-PRO-XL with TubeGuard is the tablet. This time-release tablet includes cleaners that help obliterate biofilm, clean tubes better, and also apply a corrosion inhibitor.
NED: How long did it take from conception to final production?
TK: Speed to market wasn’t the largest concern for us. Getting it right was. It took about three years from inception to completion, and we’ll continue to refine the technology as it matures.
NED: Who is your target audience and what benefits will they achieve from using this product?
TK: Target audience for this machine is the mechanical engineer responsible for HVAC maintenance at large facilities and professional contractors. The benefit they and their customers achieve is the knowledge that tube cleaning maintenance completed with a RAM-PRO-XL delivers cleaner tubes, protected from energy-robbing corrosion.
NED: What effect did cost factors have in changing the final design of the product?
TK: While the development of the tablet technology certainly offered engineering challenges, it never put us in a position where cost targets were challenged too much. We were fortunate that a couple of key long-standing Goodway vendors were involved with the development process. They were so excited to participate in a ground-breaking initiative that they poured much of their own sweat equity into the project. The result is one in which we can all be proud.
