Subscribing to a "keep-it-to-yourself" research mentality makes innovation impossible.
That's the opinion of Mike Beffel, executive director at the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing.
In order to push technologies and processes to the next level, "you have to reach out to other companies - even your competitors - and form a collaboration so you can handle a major innovation," Beffel says.
"If you try to do it all yourself, chances are you're never going to get there."
Over the past few years, there have been rumblings that manufacturers are shifting to a more collaborative model, shedding the anachronistic, first-to-market ideal that has been so prevalent in industry.
